Mirrored Glass
In the late 1970s, an Adelaide craftsman was discovered who would play an integral role in the decoration of the Melbourne Pancake Parlour restaurants.
Reg Stevens ran a small sign writing business in Adelaide with his two sons, specialising in – and becoming a legend in – exquisitely crafted reverse painting on mirrored glass. Shops all over Adelaide already had superb windows emblazoned with gold leafed lettering. His work was a natural for The Pancake Parlours.
Reg Stevens, together with Peter Von, took the well-established characters – The Granny, The Telephone Man, The Tossing Lady and of course, The LOVELY! Lady – and adapted them to produce the exquisite mirrors that you see in every restaurant.
Sometimes, a mirror would take months to produce, so elaborate was the technique, with each layer of painstakingly applied paint permanently backed to withstand the rigorous mirroring process and the 24-carat gold leaf lettering lifting the whole design. They were works of art!
Reg Stevens mirrors are amongst the best produced anywhere in the world.
